Medical Tourism Checklist: Planning Stem Cell Treatment in Thailand
Everything to settle before you book flights — visas, realistic timelines, total budget beyond the treatment quote, and aftercare once you are home.
Budget 20–35% above the treatment quote for flights, accommodation, transfers, diagnostics billed on the day, and a contingency for an extended stay.
Your timeline
1
8–12 weeks before
- Shortlist three clinics and request written protocols and full price breakdowns.
- Send your medical records and recent imaging for a remote assessment.
- Discuss the plan with your own doctor at home and document their view.
- Check whether your condition and protocol need a Medical Treatment Visa.
2
4–6 weeks before
- Confirm the treatment date and get the inclusions in writing, including cell dose.
- Book refundable or flexible flights and accommodation near the clinic.
- Arrange travel insurance and read the elective-treatment exclusions.
- Request the clinic's letter of invitation if applying for an MT visa.
3
1–2 weeks before
- Complete any pre-treatment bloodwork the clinic requires.
- Confirm airport transfer and who meets you on arrival.
- Prepare a medication list, allergy list and emergency contact for the clinic file.
- Confirm the follow-up schedule and who to contact after you fly home.
4
On the day and after
- Ask for the certificate of analysis before administration, not after.
- Record the batch number, cell count and viability in your own notes.
- Keep all receipts and discharge documentation for your home physician.
- Do not fly within 24–72 hours of infusion unless the clinic clears it.
Budgeting beyond the quote
Typical extra costs
- Return flights: $600–$1,800 depending on origin and season.
- Accommodation near Bangkok clinics: $60–$250 per night.
- Airport transfers and local travel: $80–$300 for the trip.
- Pre-treatment diagnostics billed on arrival: $200–$2,200.
- Companion travel, if you need support after the procedure.
- Contingency for an extra three to five nights if treatment is delayed.
Choosing a city
- Bangkok — the widest choice of clinics, the largest laboratories and the best hospital backup if something goes wrong.
- Phuket and Koh Samui — resort-oriented longevity and aesthetic programs, easier recovery environment, fewer complex-case facilities.
- Chiang Mai — quieter, lower living costs, a small number of established wellness-led clinics.
- Pattaya — accessible from Bangkok with lower accommodation costs.
Aftercare at home
- Agree the follow-up schedule before you leave — at minimum a review at 6 and 12 weeks.
- Give your home physician the full discharge pack, including the certificate of analysis.
- Repeat the same outcome measures used at baseline so any change is measurable.
- Report any adverse event to the clinic in writing and keep a copy.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a visa to travel to Thailand for treatment?
- Many nationalities receive a visa exemption of 30 to 60 days on arrival, which covers most treatment trips. Longer multi-session programs may require a Medical Treatment Visa (Non-Immigrant MT), which needs a letter from the treating hospital or clinic.
- How long should I stay in Thailand?
- A single infusion or joint injection usually needs three to five days including consultation, treatment and a post-treatment review. Multi-session neurological or metabolic programs typically run seven to twenty-one days.
- Do Thai clinics speak English?
- Most clinics serving international patients operate in English, and larger Bangkok facilities offer Arabic, Mandarin, Russian and Japanese interpretation. Confirm that the treating doctor, not only the coordinator, communicates in your language.
- Is travel insurance valid for this?
- Standard travel insurance usually excludes complications arising from elective treatment abroad. Read the medical-tourism exclusions carefully and consider specialist cover.
- Can I fly straight after treatment?
- Most clinics advise waiting 24 to 72 hours after an IV infusion and longer after joint injection or intrathecal delivery. Book flexible flights.
