Thai FDA regulation, clinic licensing, what to verify, and how the system actually works.
Yes — within limits. Thailand does not operate a blanket ban or a blanket permission. Stem cell treatment is governed by the Thai FDA, the Medical Council of Thailand, and Ministry of Public Health facility licensing. Haematopoietic transplantation for blood disorders is established practice. Most other uses are not formally approved therapies for the conditions they are marketed for.
Who regulates what
- Thai FDA — regulates cell products, imports and manufacturing standards. See fda.moph.go.th.
- Medical Council of Thailand — registers physicians and sets professional conduct rules. Verify a doctor at tmc.or.th.
- Ministry of Public Health — licenses the clinic or hospital facility itself.
- Visa and entry rules for medical travel are published at thaievisa.go.th.
What this means in practice
- A licensed clinic can legally operate while offering treatments that are not individually approved for a specific condition.
- Marketing that claims a treatment is 'Thai FDA approved' for MS, autism or longevity is almost always inaccurate.
- Cell processing should occur in a certified laboratory — ask whether it is GMP-certified and where it is located.
- Imported cell products face additional controls; ask where the cells originate.
What to verify before booking
- The clinic licence number issued by the Ministry of Public Health.
- The treating physician's Medical Council registration number.
- The laboratory's GMP or ISO certificate, and its physical location.
- A certificate of analysis for the cells, including viability and sterility testing.
- Written confirmation of what the price includes and what is billed separately.
10 signs of a quality stem cell clinic in Thailand
- The clinic sets realistic expectations and discusses likely outcomes honestly rather than promising a cure.
- A certificate of analysis is offered as standard practice, before you pay the balance.
- The treating physician is named, and the registration number can be confirmed with the Medical Council.
- Assessment comes first, and any multi-session plan is agreed after that assessment.
- Indicative pricing is published or shared in writing at enquiry stage.
- The laboratory is named, certified, and its location is stated.
- Cell source, dose and viability standards are published clearly.
- Consent documentation explains what is known and what is still being studied.
- A written discharge summary and follow-up schedule are part of the package.
- Communication is unhurried, with time to ask questions before deciding.
Licensing of the facility is not the same as approval of a specific therapy. Both questions need separate answers.
